D’Arcy George Wareham died on 19 March 1984 leaving a Will. He left his farm at Arapawanui to be held in trust and used for the benefit of children (being persons under the age of 20 years) resident in the Hawke’s Bay County. The Will was contested under the Family Protection Act 1955 and subsequently a proportion of the proceeds were received by the Attorney General. The Attorney General, in consultation with Public Trust, resettled the funds on trust appointing Public Trust as Trustee.
The Trust Deed named Camp Wareham as the beneficiary to receive distributions of income from the trust. Camp Wareham closed in 2016.
The purposes of the Trust Deed are very specific and the Trustee is required to apply the terms and conditions as outlined in the Deed. The object of the Trust is for the welfare and benefit of minor children (as set out by the Map boundaries in the NZ Gazette 1979) by maintenance of recreational camping and sporting facilities in the Hawke’s Bay County. ‘Eligible holiday camp’ is defined in the Deed meaning: holiday camp in the County of Hawkes Bay which is managed by a charitable trust.
Public Trust has been actively considering the most effective operation for the Trust with a view to seeking expressions of interest from eligible holiday camps in the Hawkes Bay County. The Trustee will consider the viability of a one-off grant round dependent on the expressions of interest received. Public Trust is ensuring the trust operates in a practical manner in today’s environment taking into account changes in society the past 40 years as well as changes in the Hawkes Bay County boundary.
Expressions of interest are invited from children’s holiday camps (for persons under the age of 20 years) to be emailed to [email protected] by 31 March 2024 detailing your camps:
