The John Burns Award for Courage and Perseverance

The John Burns Award for Courage and Perseverance is granted to tertiary students living in the Wellington region who have exhibited outstanding qualities of courage and perseverance in the face of adversity, including health, disability and family circumstances.

The award is open to students who are...

• living in Wellington City, Hutt City, Kapiti District, Porirua City, southern Wairarapa, within 60 kilometres of the Wellington Central Railway Station.

• under the age of 23 years old at the time of the closing date for applications.

• studying full-time in New Zealand for their first tertiary qualification.

• in need of financial assistance.

History

This Award is a memorial to John Burns, a Naval Officer, who died in 1967 after suffering many years of ill health. The John Burns Award for Courage and Perseverance was established by Patricia Burns, John's sister, after her death. Patricia Burns wanted John's memory to live on, and for the recipients to know that success could still be achieved despite adversity.

The John Burns Award for Courage and Perseverance is administered by Public Trust. Recipients are chosen by the Advisory Committee comprising Public Trust and the Royal New Zealand Navy.

How to apply

The award is granted every biannually (2024, 2026, 2028) and applications are open from 1 August to 30 September.
